Hang On
to Summer

With wall-attached
hanging baskets

by Randy Rogers

In every garden, there always seems to be at least one barren wall: that spot that everyone sees that seems to cry out for the softening effect of planting. However, these difficult spots frequently do not have a planting bed or the space for a container and so are in need of the magic of the hanging wall basket.

Wall baskets are usually constructed of galvanized metal. Some of these containers have plastic coatings, which protect the metal from rusting. They come in many shapes and sizes, from 12 to 52 inches long with proportional varying widths. In order to retain the potting soils, various types of materials are used to create a liner, including sphagnum moss and pre-shaped fibrous coco liners. Soil mixtures should be light, but not too light. Baskets can easily dry out, and they require soil that retains moisture in order to demand lower maintenance and require less watering. It is vital to understand that, large or small, these baskets can be very heavy when planted and watered, so attaching the hanging basket to the wall requires the installation of galvanized metal screws that are appropriate for the size of the container.

Wall baskets can be planted before or after they are hung. The plant selection will vary according to the location of the basket. If you plan to enjoy your hanging basket throughout the year, an evergreen plant should be selected as the focal point. This plant should be selected based on shape and its ability to be durable and beautiful throughout the year. Liriope, rosemary and red yucca are a few of the choices that have proven successful.

Seasonal color can add spice and beauty. Some of the favorite seasonal color selections for spring and summer are begonias, portulaca (moss rose), bougainvillea and hibiscus. During the fall and winter add pansies or cyclamen for additional color.

Watering can be completed by hand or, if available, your irrigation contractor may be able to provide a drip irrigation line to your basket. A time-released fertilizer can be added twice each year, or liquid fertilizers can be added monthly during the growing season. In the spring add additional sphagnum moss if needed. Sometimes the birds use it to build their nests.

Enjoy the magic of a wall basket or traditional hanging basket as a focal point to view from inside your home, or use it to add color and interest to your patio this summer.
