hot summer ahead

Regardless of what your calendar says, May is the beginning of summer in central Texas. Temperatures creep into the 90s, and cool season annuals decline more with each warm day.

While the weather is still pleasant for gardening, now is the time to clean out beds and transition to warm season plantings. When planning your summer garden, think ahead to the hot days of July and August, and plant only what you’ll want to care for then.

PLAN BEFORE PLANTING
Remove weeds and unwanted plants from the flower bed. Spread a three to four inch layer of compost, and turn the soil over to blend in this organic matter. Rotted leaves, peat moss, humus and aged manure are all good amendments to the soil.
