Q. We’re restoring the bathrooms in our vintage home, and I’m totally confused over the variety and finishes of plumbing fixtures. How do I know what products are the best? What styles will fit the period of the house, and what kind of finish is best
for durability and maintenance?

A. There are several ways you can approach this project, depending upon what’s most important to you. If quality is your No. 1 concern, start with the rankings of each product: toilets, lavatories, tubs, showers, faucets and accessories. When you’re armed with that information, move on to choosing a style within those brands that you find exceptional or, at least, acceptable. Research the original styles of fixtures installed during the time that your home was built.

Let’s start with toilets. Toto ranks at the top of the list, so we’ll use that as an example as we check out styles. Choose an online search engine to check out key words like “period-style toilets” or “antique toilets.”
Then, match up your findings with examples that you see on Toto’s Web site (www.totousa.com) or in product catalogs.
